SUMMARY Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to assist library patrons by providing service at various desks, and accurately arrange and shelve reading material. Employees in this classification perform clerical level work. Performs related work as required. Shelves and retrieves material from the shelves. Inspects library shelves for accuracy in shelving. Assists in searching for lost or misplaced materials.

Processes library card application forms. Provides service at the various public service desks using the automated library computer system. Maintains holds shelves, adding and removing titles per requests and reports. Assists patrons with circulation, directional, and informational questions. Collects fines and fees. Assists in training new employees. Maintains information displays.

Maintains and updates list of new acquisitions. Assists other library employees as needed. Assists in closing and securing library. Comply with all written City policies and procedures. Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures. Includes the ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.

Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information, such as library policy and procedure manuals. Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Requires the ability to exercise the judgment required in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by set procedures or sequences. Requires the ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as operating a computer terminal, photocopier, or cash register as well as shelving material. The ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, subordinates and customers with respect.
